Experience:
Tonya joined our firm’s Litigation + Dispute Resolution Practice Group in January 2016, and was admitted to partnership in January 2021.
Tonya, an awardee of a national scholarship, worked as a Legal Officer in the Solicitor General’s Department of the Ministry of the Attorney General following her admission to practice in 2009 where she acquired considerable experience in various areas of civil law. In September 2010, Tonya left to pursue her Masters in Corporate and Commercial Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she graduated with Merit in 2011. Upon her return, Tonya was employed for a brief period in the Legal Department of the Ministry of Public Administration as an Associate Professional, where she was involved in the review of the telecommunications legislation and commercial contracts. From March 2012 to December 2015, Tonya was employed as a Judicial Research Counsel at the Judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago.
As a member of our Litigation + Dispute Resolution Practice Group Tonya advises the firm’s clients on a wide variety of commercial matters and prepares opinions on many different aspects of the law. She appears in the High Court and Court of Appeal instructing Counsel in a wide variety of practice areas including banking, mortgagee actions, insurance claims, personal injuries, negligence, and public law.
She has a working knowledge of Spanish and is a member of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago and the firm’s representative on the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Commerce.
