Experience:

Tonya joined our firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department in January 2016. A National Scholar, Tonya obtained her Bachelor of Law Degree and Legal Education Certificate from the University of the West Indies and the Hugh Wooding Law School respectively and was admitted to practice in 2009.

Following her admission, Tonya worked as a Legal Officer in the Solicitor General’s Department of the Ministry of the Attorney General from 2009 to August 2010, where she acquired considerable experience in various areas of civil law. In September 2010, Tonya left to pursue her Masters in Corporate and Commercial Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she graduated with Merit in 2011. Upon her return, Tonya was employed for a brief period in the Legal Department of the Ministry of Public Administration as an Associate Professional, where she was involved in the review of the telecommunications legislation and commercial contracts. From March 2012 to December 2015, Tonya was employed as a Judicial Research Counsel at the Judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago. During her tenure at the Judiciary, Tonya had the privilege of being attached to a Master of the High Court, three High Court judges and a Court of Appeal judge, and was exposed to all areas of the law, including family, civil and criminal law. As a Judicial Research Counsel, Tonya was able to hone her legal research and writing skills as well as her oral and written communication skills under the guidance of some of the finest legal minds in the country.

As a member of our Litigation and Dispute Resolution Team, Tonya advises the firm’s clients on a wide variety of matters and prepares opinions on many different aspects of the law. She appears in the High Court and Court of Appeal instructing Counsel in several practice areas including commercial litigation, defamation, family, personal injuries, medical negligence and judicial review.

Tonya brings to the firm an incisive and analytical mind and a wealth of experience acquired during the course of her interesting and varied legal career.
